Hikers urged to help prevent ongoing vandalism

The Fernkloof Rangers are once again facing the frustrating issue of ‘No Dogs’ signs being removed or damaged in the reserve. It is particularly concerning that this behaviour is being carried out by so-called ‘respected’ adults, many of whom frequently use the nature reserve to walk their dogs.

The Fernkloof Nature Reserve is protected by the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act, meaning pets are not permitted anywhere in the reserve, except for the Blue Route Klipspringer Trail and the Botanical Garden. In these areas, dogs must be on a leash and under control at all times.

Whether the signs are illegally removed or not, these areas remain strictly no-dog zones. Damaging the signs does not change this.

Vandalism of this nature costs the municipality significant resources, diverting funds from other projects and upgrades scuh as fixing the contour paths and removing of alien trees. Those found guilty of stealing, damaging, or removing signs could face criminal charges and fines of up to R2 500.

The Fernkloof Rangers are requesting hikers to report any incidents of signage being removed, stolen, or damaged in the reserve. Please contact Overstrand Municipality Law Enforcement at the 24/7 number 028 313 8996 or report via the Collab Citizen app.
